Target Area: Women
in prostitution from Falkland Road (Play House), Kamathipura,
South Mumbai.
Women here, are largely exploited victims of commercial
sex trafficking. Abject poverty is the main reason so many women
and girls are sold as sex slaves, often by their own families or
husbands.
• Set up in 1998, Apne
Aap Women's Collective (AAWC) is a Non Governmental Organisation
(NGO) with no other branches
• To work with underprivileged women, especially those in
brothel-based prostitution and their children
AAWC is NOT about
changing the world,
It’s about making a DIFFERENCE……. ………
to the lives of marginalised women,
who are abandoned, destitute, exploited,
with little resources to keep their body and soul together |
Objectives
• Women: To be a source
of solace, care and support
• Sparrows: To
equip the daughters of women in prostitution, with skills and support
to pursue a dignified life, thus breaking the cycle of prostitution
• Children: To
get children used to an educational environment at a formative age,
to decrease school drop out rates
AAWC focusses
on activities that help women fight for
their basic Human Rights, to create a life of dignity 'for themselves'
- 'Apne Aap'.
At Apne Aap, we actively support
them as they rebuild their self esteem and educate their daughters
(whom we fondly call 'Sparrows') and children... so they can choose
a profession/ future and dare to dream of a life outside the brothels.
Since we began nine years ago, we have had nearly
700 women, 165 girls and 85 children less than
five years as our beneficiaries.
